Not only is it delicious and nutritious, but it's also easy to make and economical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It cooks in minutes yet is full of comfort food flavors and good-for-you nutrients you'll feel good serving the whole family. It's a pear-shaped squash with thin green skin. Mostly prepared as a vegetable but is botanically a fruit and can be consumed raw. <\/li><li><strong>Shrimp<\/strong>- I like to use large shrimp and chop them up to give the appearance of \"plenty\" but using less.<\/li><li><strong>Oyster sauce<\/strong>- seasons the dish along with salt and pepper. Adds a touch of sweetness and umami flavor.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div id=\"callout-block_39bcd9e029cfe077d35c80d3b7df424d\" class=\"oc-gutenberg-block oc-recipe-tip-block callout__default\">\n\n\t<span class=\"callout--icon__default\"><span class=\"block-icon-tip\"><\/span><\/span>\n\n\t<div class=\"callout--content__default\">\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"callout--title__default\">\n\n\t\t\t\tCook's tip\n\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"callout--text__default\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<p>The sayote fruit has a sticky resin that can irritate the skin. Use gloves when peeling and cutting. Or slice off the top of the sayote and rub on the cut part of the chayote in a circular motion for about 30 seconds. You can keep them from overcooking in two ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list is-layout-flow wp-block-list-is-layout-flow\"><li>Remove from the pan after sauteing and return back to the pan during the last 4 to 5 minutes of cook time when the sayote is just about done.<\/li><li>Or, use hot water like in the recipe to speed up cook time. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" data-pin-description=\"Sayote guisado is easy to make and budget-friendly, too. Enjoy it on its own or pair it with steamed rice and fried fish or grilled meat. <\/li><li>Store leftovers in a container with a tight-fitting lid and refrigerate for up to 3 days. This dish doesn't freeze well as the chayote turns mushy when frozen and thawed.<\/li><li>Reheat in a pan over medium heat to 165 F or microwave at 2 to 3-minute intervals until completely
